The Fashion Phenomenon That Is: #Aliyahcore

By | Frigillana Dugan

Rising TikTok sensation, Aliyah’s Interlude, is taking over fashion trends with her unique sense of style as we enter the new year of 2023. With the influence of Black alternative fashion, along with Harajuku influence, y2k, and streetwear. Aliyahcore stands for individuality and self-expression, pride with a “camp” sense of style, which is characterized by displaying your personality through your clothing and stepping outside of fashion norms.

Aliyah came to be by posting videos of herself, strutting her stuff and showing off her outfits across the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. Over the course of her internet presence within just the last year, she has risen to approximately 2.4 million followers on TikTok, approaching 500k followers on Instagram. She herself has become an inspiration to women everywhere, specifically Black Women. Alternative fashion is already looked at as different, weird, a style living outside the margins of fashion, and that is exactly what made her so unique to the media. When it comes to alternative fashion, people normally associate it with being goth, emo, etc., but Aliyah has proven time and time again that you don’t need to be in all black to be considered “alternative”, and that Aliyahcore brings the color and excitement to alternative fashion with her love for pink.

Aliyah stated that when she first posted these pictures of herself on the internet, pairing a bikini on the beach with moon boots and furry earmuffs, she received backlash and hate for committing a “fashion don’t”, so how is something so off, so revolutionary?

Aliyah commented she believes her aesthetic is revolutionary because “I take things from many different subsets of fashion, into one simple genre”. When it comes to her earmuffs, she gets the idea from Harajuku fashion, which is one of the main staples in their everyday outfits.

Her aesthetic is more than just what she’s wearing and where, but more about your accessories and “loving yourself out loud”. From this, we can gather that Aliyahcore has absolutely no limitations, and it’s about being who you are fearlessly from the outside world and not fitting into a “box” or conforming, but creating within yourself.

As we can see, Ms. Interlude incorporates a variety of accessories into her everyday outfits that she wears to “the train station, to the grocery store”. She wears furs from head to toe, and keeps her silhouette intact by wearing mini skirts and cropped tops, accompanied by fishnets, garters, and of course, what would a girl do without her nails?

Over time, creators on TikTok have tried to dub her revolution and fashion, saying she was never the first to do it because back in the day rapper Asian Doll dressed this way. Ms. Interlude has commented on these accusations that she “never said she hasn’t drawn inspiration from other black women and that she wasn't the first to do it” whether it be Rico Nasty or Asian Doll, and other Black alternative Women. She’s simply just putting on her clothes and being herself unapologetically, and the internet loves her for that. She’s a model at heart, turned into a fashion icon.

With her rise to stardom have come new opportunities, such as modeling for Decatur, Georgia star, Jacquees. Aliyah has gone from “growing up listening to him to modeling for his brand”.

As we can see, Aliyah has made a name for herself and her own personal style/trend. She has brought herself plenty of new opportunities to rise on top of TikTok, making big things truly happen for herself, modeling for other fashion brands, such as Finesse Studios, and being invited twice so far to New York Fashion Week. We hope to see much much more of Aliyah’s Interlude and Aliyahcore throughout the year, whether it be from her or the girls she inspires to dress like her, because like she says,

“Aliyahcore today, tomorrow, yesterday, the day after that, and all of 2023, period.”
