Technological Influence in the Fashion Industry

By | Gabrielle Kennedy

As technology advances, it has become an invaluable tool with a significant impact on the fashion industry. These remarkable innovations benefit every aspect of the field, yet, like any tool, they come with drawbacks. Being immersed in a school of fashion, I see firsthand how technology can both enhance and hinder the design process.

In pattern-making, we use tools like CLO-3D and Browzwear to create patterns and conduct model fittings virtually and simultaneously. Pattern-making software enables students to create patterns sustainably and efficiently, with 3D garment renderings that enhance portfolios by illustrating the design process. This is an incredible method for developing patterns when draping isn’t feasible, saving valuable time when designing in a professional setting. However, while these tools are powerful, it’s essential not to rely on them exclusively. A common challenge among students is that patterns may appear flawless digitally, but during the construction phase or when fitted on a physical model, unforeseen fit issues can arise. Despite these potential challenges, such tools remain an invaluable asset. Proficiency with these programs has become an industry-standard skill and is an impressive addition to a designer’s resume.

Another way technology is transforming the fashion industry is through the Ditto Patterns Projector. Last week, representatives from Ditto visited Rockwell Hall to demonstrate this innovative tool, which allows users to cut patterns directly from projected designs, eliminating the need for paper. With Ditto’s app, users can upload personal patterns or choose from preloaded options, set up the projector, and project the patterns onto fabric for cutting. The compact, seven-foot projector is easy to fit into any workspace and simple to disassemble for transport. This tool saves both time and money by reducing paper waste and eliminating printing costs.

These are just a few ways technology has streamlined the design process and increased efficiency. The school of fashion has done an excellent job keeping students up-to-date with technology’s dynamic impact on the industry. New advancements emerge every day, making it crucial to stay current, expand skill sets, and explore innovative ways to express creativity.
