OP-ED Overview of Award Show Fashion

By | Torri Paveloi

The award season red carpet is typically where we see custom couture with popular brands such as Gucci, Dior, Prada, Dolce and Gabanna, Versace, and Balmain showcasing their newest creations. This year, however, I have noticed many Hollywood elite are wearing vintage pieces paying homage to retro looks of the past. I love this new direction as it differs from years previous and feels timeless.

The Golden Globes kicked off award show season this year and people had a lot to say not just about the fashion. Joy Coy was a first-time host of this year's Golden Globes and people were not that impressed. His opening monologue was nothing short of disappointing with a few distasteful jokes targeted toward the Barbie movie and Taylor Swift which proved that not only did he miss the entire premise of the Barbie movie, but he also isn’t that funny. Hosting the Gloden Globes is a tough gig, however, it seems that Coy was just unprepared as he blamed his writers for his bad jokes. Despite Coy's horrible performance as a host, the night was filled with many fabulous looks. Some of my favorite looks of the night included Elle Fanning who dipped into the fashion archives wearing a beautiful vintage Balmain ballgown with a bow across the bodice. Another look I fell in love with was Elizbeth Olson paying homage to the late fashion icon Vivienne Westwood. This couture powder white gown was striking and I loved the lace sheer detailing underneath the corset. Some of my favorite custom looks of the night included Dua Lipa in Schiaparelli couture, Margot Robbie in custom Giorgio Armani, and Emma Stone in custom Louis Vuitton.

Following the Golden Globes, the 2024 Govenor Awards showcased some outstanding looks both vintage and custom. Olivia Rodrigo wore a strapless black vintage Saint Laurent gown accompanied with elegant dangle earrings. Another one of my favorite looks was the Cailee Spaeny Miu Miu dress along with Ava DuVernay in custom Louis Vuitton.

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards took place this past week and all the A-Listers were there. Miley Cyrus wore a vintage, sparkly Bob Mackie dress for her performance of “Flowers,” and Laverne Cox looked stunning in a vintage Mugler from 1989.

The decisions these stars made to go into the archives go way beyond style. Award shows are crowded and competitive and there is an abundant amount of pressure for celebrities to put together the most extravagant looks and be unique in their way. I love it when celebrities wear vintage pieces; it promotes sustainability on the red carpet and is a refresher from what we typically see. Sometimes, creating new outfits just isn’t necessary, especially when there is a goldmine of vintage ensembles for stars to choose from, all of which pack just as much of a punch.

I am ecstatic to see more red carpet looks as award season is far from over. And if we are lucky there is sure to be much more vintage style to come!
