Fashion in Counterpoint: Where Style Meets Sound

By | Judaea Wilbon

Fashion in music videos is very important, it makes the video what it is, it brings out the detail theory of the song. It helps create a specific aesthetic and atmosphere and generally can influence how the fans of those artists dress. When people look at music videos they’re typically looking at the fashion involved throughout the video. They’re looking at what the artist has on, what the background people/dancers are wearing, the scenery/backdrops, and how they match or don’t match with the outfit, etc. Though fashion in music videos is more than just what the artist wears, as everything throughout the video has to match cohesively with the theme of the video and generally make sense.. That’s why sometimes you get those videos where you’re like “What’s going on here?” because the video doesn't match the theme of the song. It takes talent to put the fashion of a song into full effect of a video, which is why these artists have creative directors/stylists etc.

Think about how different artists get shown different love outside of just their music when they actually know how to dress. Take Rhianna or Cardi B, for example, outside of being an artist, they have become some of the world's best-dressed celebrities. People love them for more than just their music, and in order to become these fashionistas it started with becoming one through their music. This is also why you see a lot of fashion brands wanting artists to model in their clothing because they really go hand in hand with one another. Though just as much as fashion influences music it’s vice versa as well. Designers take pride in the music they showcase at their fashion shows as it curates a specific vibe to the viewers.
