Exploring Winter Wardrobe: The Relationship Between Seasonal Depression and Comfortable/Casual Outfits

By | Torri Paveloi

Many people I know including myself are not the biggest fans of Winter. I find that after the holidays are over I am completely overwhelmed by the weather and lack of daylight I am receiving on a day-to-day basis. I also notice that this time of year I am far less motivated to go out and do basic things such as grocery shopping, working out, and spending time with friends and family. With that being said, I also have far less motivation to put together a cute outfit for class, especially regarding the extreme weather in Ohio.

I then began to wonder if other people felt similar to me. Like many, I think I am currently struggling with seasonal depression and/or seasonal affective disorder when it comes to styling my clothes. When looking at the way people dress this time of year I picked up on a couple of patterns; the first is that the main goal is to stay warm as there is a huge influx of heavy-duty jackets and coats, hats, and protective headwear like earmuffs and headbands. Scarves and gloves are also extremely popular this time of year.

The next pattern I noticed was that people want to be as comfortable as possible. A common way people do this is by wearing hoodies and sweatpants this time of year along with Ugg boots or slippers.

Finally, I noticed that this time of year people are focused on covering up and blending in whereas in the warmer months, it is more about standing out. Everything I have mentioned above are all valid reasons why people dress certain ways in the Winter, however, I believe that seasonal depression has a lot more to do with our mood when picking out an outfit.

People feel seasonal depression in different ways but some common themes include persistent sadness and anxiety. Along with irritability, frustration, and hopelessness. It almost seems like people go into hibernation this time of year and have little or no energy to do things they usually enjoy. So how do you get out of this slump?

A huge thing that has helped me this time of year when I have little to no energy in the morning is picking out my outfit the night before. I’ve noticed a lot of my inspiration comes at night and it is a lot easier for me to get excited about an outfit the night before instead of scrambling around in the morning. Another way to get more inspiration involves no money at all. Go into your closet, pick out something you haven’t worn in a while, and attempt to style it. This is a fun way to get use out of what you haven’t worn in a while along with falling in love with your clothes again.

And if all else fails put back on your hoodie and sweatpants, Winter will be over before we know it and it is okay to give yourself some grace. If you get say start thinking about warmer, better days that will be here before we know it.
