Celebrity Style Evolution | JT

By | A'Myri Thornton

Jatavia "JT" Johnson has established herself as a staple in the rap industry. Known for her distinctively energetic sound, she is also emerging as a fashion icon because of her centerfold sweet-meets-gothically sleek image. JT. pushes the envelope both sonically and visually. You can't help but look. Her sartorial credentials reached new heights this week with the launch of a new campaign for Poster Girl, the high-gloss, hyper-online London company created by Francesca Capper and Natasha Sommerville. In the trailer, JT is on trial, with a look and feel reminiscent of the lo-fi paparazzi scrum of the aughts (think Lindsay Lohan's and Britney Spears' run-ins with the law, the public's enduring fascination with those days, and the era's attenuated glamor).

JT appears in court in nothing but micro-boy shorts, a G-string, a cropped jacket, long acrylics, and a venti iced coffee. The rapper's dominating presence and neo-pinup-girl allure have helped the campaign go viral.

JT alternates between coquettish and subversive looks and sometimes nails both at the same time like she did at the 2023 BET Awards in Look 40 from Jean Paul Gaultier's autumn 2022 collection. Jt dressed down the deconstructed Le Smoking corseted suit and dramatic, volumized skirt with only a delicate diamond necklace from Kallati, a black tulle hair bow, and brown lip liner (which has become something of her beauty signature). She is collaborating with CFDA-preferred stylist Miso Dam. It should also be noted that Jt's previous stylist and close friend, Monica Suh, was important in shaping and evolving the rapper's appearance.

JT enjoys experimenting with style and is not afraid to stand out. She'll go deep and go archival, as she did with a freshly worn, colorfully paned Told Oldham slip dress from fall 1994. She is also a huge Rick Owens fan.

She's been rounding out her look with pieces from Mowalola, Dilara Findikoglu, and ForBitches. This summer, JT also launched thegirljtworld, a lifestyle business and project that she aims to expand beyond mere artist goods. She's finally at ease with her style and demeanor, but she understands there will always be detractors and fans no matter what she wears. "I just want to be where I am supposed to be," JT said. “With my style, I don’t have to fit in nowhere, really, because I’m just that bitch alone.”
