Behind the Seams: A Glimpse Into the Designers of Plitz Fashion Marketing at NYFW

By | Gabrielle Kennedy

In honor of it being NYFW, I wanted to highlight Plitz Fashion Marketing for allowing me to be a part of a press junket interview with their highlighted designers. Our very own photographer of the year, Jada Corey, is interning with this company for NYFW and is working alongside the coordinator Wayne Shields. This interview was an opportunity to look inside the designers' collections and learn more about them. The talented designers this year include; Dee Dee Tufts (Designers Palace), Nina Kei (A Custom Fit), Joy Phillip Sangster (JPS Designs), and Julissa Cadena (Julissa Designs). Each designer has something unique to offer a wide variety of customers. Tufts designs are catered towards the older population so her designs have no zippers or buttons to make her garments more accessible. Kei is a custom gown designer based in New York her brand is all about making one-of-a-kind outfits while still being affordable. Sangsters’ goal of her company is to locally provide quality services to all her customers in the Duchess County area. Cadenas’ designs are a more modest approach and use her designs as a way to spread Christianity and its messages.

Throughout the interview with these designers, it was clear that they are very experienced and knowledgeable about the industry and their brands. This was a great way to pick their brains and get a glimpse into their brands and how they see the fashion industry. For many of them being sustainable is very important to their brands. For any independent designer, it is important to get the most out of your material and resources so for these designers it is crucial to understand this concept. Another important aspect that was touched upon during the interview is how they use their culture and how it reflects in their work. For Nina Kei, she combines aspects from European, African, and American cultures to make garments that are timeless and one-of-a-kind. She was inspired by her travels and getting to experience new cultures and she channeled those experiences in her work. Julissa Cadena uses her religious background and her personal story to connect women with the same faith and stories together through her garments.

Each of these designers has a unique journey and perspective that influences their designs and can cater to a wide range of customers. It was a great pleasure to be able to interview them and learn from their experiences in the industry because they have a lot of valuable information to pass on. I highly recommend checking out each of these designers' impressive works and following along with their careers.
