A Semester in NYC: Lessons, Growth, and Experiences

End-of-semester Progress Recap with Study Abroad Coordinator, Jacob Jones (New York Fashion Study Away Program).

By | Jacob Jones

I have officially spent a whole semester in NYC, and it was definitely a lot, to say the least. It was a great experience from beginning to end, but NYC can be overwhelming to digest.

One highlight was my Junior Studio 1 class, where I was pushed to become a better designer and develop my own design aesthetic. The semester included four projects, with the first requiring completion in just 36 hours. For the final project, I sewed two complete looks. I was also encouraged to design outside of my preferred market, which led me to explore menswear. This class was my most time-consuming and emotionally jarring, but it was also the most rewarding.

Another memorable class was Contemporary Fashion Designers, taught by a WWD writer and an incredibly knowledgeable professor. While we often butted heads, she made me think critically and improved my writing significantly. Lastly, I had a Study Tour class, where we visited factories, art galleries, and showrooms. It was a fantastic way to find inspiration for other projects.

NYC itself was a world of inspiration. The second-hand shopping scene is vibrant, and I recommend checking out the Chelsea Flea Market (every Sunday), Grand Bazaar Flea Market (every Sunday), Second Street Market, and Buffalo Exchange.

The nightlife scene is also unique. There are both 21+ and 18+ events, so don't hesitate to research and explore—it’s worth experiencing at least once.

Eating in NYC feels like an extracurricular activity. I love dining in the West Village, especially at an Italian restaurant called Arthur and Sons. If you’re splurging, try eating in the Financial District; it's a memorable experience.

Finally, don’t let opportunities slip through your fingers. With NYC being the fashion capital of the country, internships and networking opportunities abound. Take full advantage to enhance your career. Overall, NYC exceeded my expectations—it’s all about what you make of it. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world.
