Black artists have consistently pushed the boundaries of the music genre, and Lil Uzi Vert’s third studio album, Pink Tape, is certainly no exception. At nearly 90 minutes long, containing well-placed features, and 3 bonus tracks, Pink Tape was one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year. Throughout the album, Lil Uzi Vert expresses different sides to them—ranging from adrenaline-filled rage rap in Suicide Door and x2 to slower confession-filled tracks like Rehab and Days Come and Go, there’s something for every Uzi fan. While harsher critics have claimed that the number of genres explored in the album makes it messy, the sound variety is one of the great qualities of this album. Lil Uzi has always shown appreciation for Japanese culture and the influence rock and metal have had on them is apparent. Seeing such experimental tracks as The End, featuring BABYMETAL (Japanese kawaii metal band), and Werewolf, featuring Bring Me the Horizon on an album alongside hip-hop tracks is exciting for the ever-growing genre. Uzi’s ability to create viral hits is undeniable, as seen with Pink Tape’s lead single, Just Wanna Rock. The Jersey Club song originally went viral on TikTok for its addictive vocals and accompanying dance. The authenticity and versatility demonstrated by Lil Uzi Vert is what makes Pink Tape a no-skip album.
